Prenatal care and pregnancy observation is the ally in the health of the expectant mother and her fetus until delivery.

Trust Relationship between Pregnant Woman and Gynecologist

The pregnancy that happened with or without planning, naturally or with some method of assisted reproduction, needs a relationship of trust between the pregnant woman and the gynecologist for the scientific monitoring of her physical health but also the support of her psychological state, which is characterized by many transitions.

Pregnancy is a normal process, not a disease, and should be treated as such

Pregnancy Symptoms

There are many pregnancy symptoms during pregnancy, but this does not mean that pregnant women will experience them all.

Pregnancy symptoms include:

  • Period Delay
  • Morning sickness with or without vomiting
  • Frequent urination
  • Breast Swelling
  • Cramps
  • Feeling Tired

The 3 Trimesters or 40 Weeks of Pregnancy

The pregnancy duration is calculated from the first day of the last period. In other words, two extra weeks are added when you are not actually pregnant.

The reason for this is that the exact date of fertilization cannot be calculated with certainty.

So the duration of pregnancy is about 3 trimesters or 40 weeks or 280 days.

With the pregnancy calendar you can know which week you are in and what exactly is happening in that particular period of time to you and to the fetus.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care in a non high risk pregnancy usually begins before the 10th week of pregnancy.

It includes visits to the gynecologist's office, which are scheduled more and more frequently as the delivery approaches, as well as several tests.

During the visits, the gynecologist will proceed to:

  • Complete medical, obstetric, family history (at the first visit), which will "indicate" the tests that need to be done.
  • Clinical examination at all stages of pregnancy (measurement of blood pressure and weight each time).
  • Laboratory control, which includes mostly simple tests.
  • Ultrasound control with basic tests:
    1. The measurement of cervical transparency (first trimester 11th - 13th week).
    2. The anatomical control of the second trimester of pregnancy (level b).
    3. The ultrasound of fetal growth (Doppler).
  • In special invasive diagnostic tests such as:
    1. chorionic villus biopsy
    2. amniocentesis

which are recommended to expectant mothers, depending on their age and medical history.

What is a High Risk Pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is a pregnancy that requires special attention, either because of a problem with the mother, the pregnancy, or a genetic problem with the fetus.

    Medical treatments

From the first trimester, the doctor will inform the pregnant woman about the changes she needs to make in her life, such as stopping smoking and alcohol.

He will also give her advice on a healthy diet that will benefit her and the fetus, without increasing her weight by many kilos.

In addition, during pregnancy, the following preparations are usually administered to strengthen the organism of the mother and fetus:

    • Folic acid
    • Iron
    • Calcium
    • Vitamin D
    • Magnesium

    Frequent questions

    I have nausea, heartburn, my breasts are swollen and tender, and I'm jet lagged. I'm pregnant;

Early pregnancy symptoms often resemble premenstrual symptoms. So if you see that they persist, take a pregnancy test and contact your gynecologist.

    When does a pregnancy "tie"?

Pregnancy needs observation. However, it is considered that after the 12th week the chances of miscarriage decrease significantly.

Are certain movements prohibited during pregnancy?

It is best to avoid lying on your back for long periods of time, especially after 16 weeks, as the pressure on the blood vessels can cause fainting. You should also avoid bending down, as well as any other movement that can cause a fall.

Does vaginal blood always indicate a problem in pregnancy?

Vaginal bleeding in pregnancy can have many causes, often not serious. However, you should inform your gynecologist immediately.
