What is genital herpes?;

Genital herpes is a cutaneous manifestation of the common herpes virus HSV-2. Sometimes however, it can also be caused by the common herpes virus HSV-1.

It is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, affecting men and women alike.

Symptoms

Symptoms of genital herpes include:

Manifestation of bubbles with yellow fluid and pain

Transmission

Genital herpes is transmitted by:

Sexual intercourse (oral, vaginal, anal)
Direct skin contact with the affected area
Contact with body fluids (saliva, semen)

It is important to note that genital herpes is usually caused by an infection of the body with the HSV-2 virus.

However, it can sometimes be caused by the herpes virus (HSV-1), which can be transmitted through oral sex.

Finally, genital herpes can be transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth.

This can put the baby at great risk, so if the mother has had genital herpes at least 6 weeks before giving birth, caesarean section is recommended as the safest method for the baby's health.

Genital herpes can be transmitted even when there are no active lesions, so the use of a condom is a must!

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of genital herpes is made mainly by a Dermatologist - Venereologist, while sometimes it is done by a gynecologist during a clinical gynecological examination.

To detect the virus that causes genital herpes, a laboratory test can be done after taking blood or a sample of the fluid secreted by the lesions.
