Melasma, often also referred to as “hyperpigmentation,” occurs where melanin is produced in higher amounts than normal. This excess melanin accumulates in specific areas, leading to darker patches or “spots” on various parts of the face.
Although it can appear on many parts of the body, melasma most often appears on the face—especially on the cheeks, forehead, and above the upper lip.
Typically, melasma is not harmful to your health. However, it can be frustrating from a cosmetic perspective because it disrupts the uniform tone of your skin. The good news is that there are many methods to address it and even more ways to prevent it in the first place.
