What is arthroscopy?
It is the examination of the final part of the colon (rectum) with a flexible endoscope. The examination is performed in a supine position on the left side using a local anesthetic gel. In rare cases, when the patient does not tolerate the examination or there co-exist diseases that cause severe pain, the examination is performed under intoxication.
What is proctoscopy?
It is the examination of the last 2-3 centimeters between the rectum and the skin of the anal area. The examination is done with the rigid proctoscope that enables the area to be thoroughly examined and the local treatments to be applied. The examination is performed using a local anesthetic. Like arthroscopy, in cases where the patient does not tolerate the examination or there co-exist diseases that cause severe pain, the examination may be performed under intoxication.
Preparation
In order for the tests to be performed and the final part of the bowel to be properly assessed, it is necessary to clean it from the contents. This is done with an enema just before the test.
Contraindications
There are no absolute contraindications for a diagnostic test when it is deemed necessary by the doctor. In case of recent surgery in the area, a period of time should elapse to allow time for healing.
Results and therapeutic possibilities during the examination
With orthoscopy it is possible to assess the mucosa of the final part of the colon as well as the anal canal.
The proctoscopy examines only the last 2-3 inches.
To better assess the extent of HPV infection, acetic acid is used which whitens the lesions.
Depending on the findings, it is possible to obtain biopsies from the suspected areas that will be sent for pathological evaluation and identification of the virus strain.
The best way to treat warts is laser cauterization or APC (Argon Plasma Coagulation).
What do I do next?
After the diagnostic orthosigmoidoscopy the patient can continue all his activities normally. If a treatment is applied, then specific instructions must be followed for the care of the area but which as a rule do not affect daily life.
In case the test was performed under intoxication, driving for 24 hours is not allowed.
When should I repeat it?
The repeat of the test depends on the extent of the HPV infection and the treatment applied. As a rule, after a treatment session, a re-examination should be done in 4-6 weeks to confirm the good results and to prevent any recurrences. After successful treatment, there should be a re-examination at 6 months, either by repeating the examination or by taking a Pap smear test. Depending on the findings, we make your re-inspection plan together.
